Why You may not feel motivated to exercise

Scientists say that our gut health is one of the main reasons why we lack motivation. Researchers and scientists from the University of Pennsylvania conducted tests on laboratory mice to better understand how gut health impacts the optimal use of muscles. They wanted to know why some mice loved their exercise wheels, while others ignored them. The researchers found that genetics had no impact on how the mice used their exercise wheels. However, they did find something else more interesting: gut bacteria.

Researchers were able discover that healthy gut microbiomes are linked to optimal muscle function. These researchers gave the animals broad-spectrum antibacterial drugs that killed hut bacteria. The distance covered by the rodents dropped significantly.

The researchers, while still working with mice and sequencing the RNA of brain areas that are responsible for motivation, discovered that the dopamine receptors in brain cells were reduced after antibiotic treatment.

Researchers continued to test mice over several years in order to understand how these effects affected the mice. They realized that Eubacterium rectale, and Coprococcuseutactus – two types of bacteria – produced compounds called fatty acidamides. These compounds acted on the endocannabinoid-receptors in the gut.

These receptors send a message to the brain telling it to reduce the production of compounds which break down dopamine. Monoamine oxidase is the name of these compounds. The mice were more willing to run again when there was less monoamine oxide.

Our colon or gut is home to trillions microbes. These are largely determined by the foods we eat and our environment. Researchers believe that the gut-brain path may have evolved to trigger prolonged physical activity according to the nutritional status in the gastrointestinal tract. Gut bacteria can tell your brain if you are fueled enough to exercise. You will lose motivation to work if you do not.
