The World’s Top Causes of Death

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been studying some of the most common causes of death for decades. Researchers and medical professionals have been able to use the data collected from this study to determine if any diseases should be curtailed as they may be considered epidemics. In places such as the United States, however, certain medical conditions like heart disease, cancer and chronic lower respiratory illnesses have taken the lives of many.

Heart disease and cancer account for approximately 46 percent deaths in the United States. These conditions, along with chronic lower respiratory illnesses, account for the half all deaths in America. The CDC report lists the top 10 causes of death in the world.

  • Heart Diseases

Heart diseases, as mentioned above, are the number one cause of death in America, causing up to 635 260 deaths per year. Heart disease is more common among men, smokers, overweight people, and families who have a difficult time accepting certain factors.

Quit smoking to prevent heart disease. Exercise for at least 30 minutes five days a weeks and pay attention to your diet are also important.

  • Cancer

Cancer is responsible for up to 598.038 deaths per year, or 21.7 percent. Different types of cancer have their own set of specific risk factors. Some risk factors are common to all cancer types. Some of these include:

  • People over a certain age
  • Smokers and alcohol drinkers
  • Overexposure to sunlight or radiation can cause skin cancer.
  • People with chronic inflammation, etc.

Uncontrolled cell growth is the cause of cancer. Cancer cannot be prevented in a definitive manner. Certain behaviors are linked to cancer. Smoking is at the top of this list. Quitting these habits will reduce your risk of cancer.

Maintaining a healthy body weight is also possible. You can eat well and exercise regularly. Regular cancer screenings are also available, including skin tests and more.


The list is not complete. Other causes of deaths include accidents, Alzheimer’s, strokes, etc. All of these factors point to the importance of eating healthily, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep.
