What is the Panic Attack?

Panic attacks can be similar to anxiety disorders like post-traumatic disorder, panic disorders and phobic disorders. In this article we will explain what a panic attack feels like, and how you can differentiate it from other anxiety-based conditions.

What Panic Attack Feels like

An overwhelming fear or terror is the feeling that accompanies a panic attack. Even when you are asleep, it can happen. You may even think that you are going crazy or about to die in some situations. The fear you feel in these situations is usually disproportionate to what the danger actually is.

A panic attack has symptoms that are similar to a heartattack. A panic attack can happen more than one time.

The pain from a panic or anxiety attack is usually localized in the middle of the chest. You may also experience rapid pulse and breathing when you are experiencing panic or anxiety. The panic attack will last only a few moments, and you’ll be tired.

Differences Between Panic Attacks and Anxiety Based Disorders

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

It is an unwarranted fear that has persisted at least for six months. At least three symptoms are required to determine whether the condition is generalized anxiety disorder.

Phobic Disorders

People with phobias experience a crippling and abnormal fear of certain things or situations, such as spiders, snakes, blood or cheese. These situations can trigger an anxiety attack. Social anxiety and agoraphobia are also examples of phobic disorder.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

PTSD can be caused by exposure to situations that could lead to death, such as earthquakes, floods and fires. It may also occur when you are exposed in a war, or if you have been involved in a shooting, or if there has been a near-death experience. Post-traumatic stress disorder can also be caused by events that endanger your physical or mental well-being, as well as the wellbeing of others. You may feel a sense of terror and powerlessness in these situations. This can be traced back to past traumatic events.

What you should know about panic attacks

Since they cannot predict when the next attack will occur, people with panic disorder can experience anxiety and worry. Around 6 million Americans suffer from panic disorder. The illness usually appears in early adulthood and is twice as prevalent in females as it is in males.
