Can this vegetable help with hair loss?

Alopecia isata, also known as patchy hair loss, is a condition that causes hair to fall out in patches.

Many different treatments or claims have been made to stimulate hair growth. You may have heard about onion juice as a strange remedy. There is evidence that suggests onion juice may help to re-grow hair and stop hair loss.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease, causes hair loss in the scalp, on the face and other parts of your body. Alopecia areata affects men and women of any age, but it is most common among people younger than 30. Alopecia areata’s exact cause is still not fully understood. However, it is most likely linked to genetic and environmental factors.

Alopecia areata is characterized by patchy hair loss and itching or burning on the scalp. Hair loss can be accompanied by skin changes such as redness or scaling. Alopecia areata is a condition that can be very distressing but it’s not life-threatening.

Conventional Treatments of Alopecia

Alopecia areata can be treated with topical, oral, and light therapies. Topical medications like minoxidil and corticosteroids can stimulate hair growth. Oral medications, such as prednisone, may also be helpful. Phototherapy or light therapy can be used to treat Alopecia Areata.

Onion juice for hair loss

Onion juice is a treatment that has gained attention in recent years for treating alopecia aroeata. In a small study published in Journal of Dermatology, it was found that topical onions juice is effective at regrowing hair in patients with patchy Alopecia Areata.

The study divided the patients into two groups. One group was treated with onion juice and the other received a placebo with tap water. The study showed that patients treated with onion had significantly more hair growth at four and six week compared to those in the control group.

The study found that men had a greater rate of hair growth than women, and the regrowth began after only two weeks of treatment. The study only involved 38 participants and further research is required to confirm that onion juice can be used as a treatment of alopecia arreata.

What is it?

It is easy to make onion juice at home using a few simple kitchen tools. Here’s one way to make onions juice:

  1. Peel a medium-sized onion and chop it.
  2. In a food processor or blender, blend the onion until it becomes a smooth puree.
  3. Squeeze and strain the puree using a cheesecloth or fine-mesh sieve to remove any solid onion pieces.
  4. Store the juice in the fridge for up to 3 days.

The juice can be extracted from an onion using a juicer, or by pressing it.

Apply the juice to areas of skin where you are losing hair.

It is still not clear how onion juice can stimulate hair growth. It is believed that the high level of sulfur in onion juice could play a part.

Sulfur, an essential mineral, is required for the production collagen and Keratin – two proteins important for healthy hair. Onion is also known to have anti-inflammatory qualities, which can help reduce inflammation and promote hair growth.

Is it Safe?

It is important to know that while onion juice can be very effective at promoting hair growth it can also have some negative side effects.

Onion juice can cause irritation of the skin, itching, or burning. If you notice any of these symptoms, immediately wash the juice off your skin.

It is also important to remember that you should never use onion juice on wounds or skin broken by a razor.

Consult a medical professional before attempting any alternative treatment. Your primary doctor or dermatologist will be able to determine the best treatment plan for you if you’re experiencing hair loss.
