Should you be concerned about chest pain in the bedroom?

Chest pain is caused by a variety of factors, ranging from acid reflux to heart attacks. Did you know, according to a study from 2012, that sexual activity can also cause chest discomfort? This is because sexual activity increases your heart rate and blood pressure. It also elevates the heart’s oxygen requirement. Blood pressure and heart rates can skyrocket seconds before orgasm, and are comparable to climbing two flights.

If you feel chest pain while having sex, it is important to be concerned. Even though chest pain is not a serious issue, it can be a sign that you have coronary heart disease.

Studies dating back to 2002 show that heart disease, like angina (a condition where the blood flow is reduced in your heart), can be caused by sex, or aerobic exercises such as running, walking, cycling and swimming. If you feel chest pains or an irregular heartbeat while having sexual relations, or even if you have shortness of breathe, then you should consult a physician.

Sex, heart attack and risk

According to a 2011 study, the risk of a heart attack occurring within 1-2 hours after sexual activity is low. For every 10,000 people who have sex at least once a week only 2 to 3 will experience a heartattack. A 2003 study found that coital angina (which occurs during or shortly after coitus) represents only 5 percent of all heart attacks.

Heart Disease In the Bedroom

In your bedroom, you should be alert for signs of heart disease. These include:

  • Chest pain: If you have been inactive physically, experiencing chest discomfort after sex can be a sign of heart disease.
  • Erectile Dysfunction: Erectile Dysfunction and heart disease symptoms are very similar. You should consult a physician if you suffer from erectile dysfunction.
  • Snoring can be an indication of heart disease. It can block the flow of oxygen to your body while you sleep. This has been linked with heart failure, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

You should consult your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms. They could be an indication of a serious health problem.
