Why do we get sick in cold weather?

Experts and scientists have been trying to find out the main cause of the rise in colds or influenza cases during winter. A study published in Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology has ended the search for answers. It explained that certain mechanisms within the nose could explain the susceptibility of humans to upper respiratory infections when it is cold.

Before the discovery mentioned above, previous studies indicated that one major characteristic of our immune system’s response to respiratory viruses is the release of membrane-bound particles known as extracellular vesicles. These vesicles or EVs are made up of proteins, RNA and DNA. They help the body to fight the virus. These EVs in the nose can help prevent viral infections. The lower temperatures of winter also cause a drop in temperature in the nasal cavities, which weakens your immune system.

This drop in temperature inside the cavity of the ship weakens the release EVs and increases the vulnerability to common colds during winter.

How a drop in temperature affects the body

A Harvard Medical School associate professor in otolaryngology reported that a drop in temperature dampens the innate immunity system response in nose. It also dehydrates both the quality and the quantity of extracellular vesicles that surround the virus. This compromised response may allow the virus to more easily adhere and infect the cells that line the nasal passages.

Studies have shown that changes in temperature, humidity and human behavior can cause upper respiratory infections. You are more likely to spend time indoors during these seasons than outside. The nasal cavity is more sensitive to temperature changes than other parts of the body because it is so close to the external environment. Other researchers have carried out more research to better understand these events. They concluded that these studies led to a reduction in the amount of packaged antiviral microRNAs and cell surface proteins expressed by EVs when exposed to ambient temperatures at colleges.
