Does this artificial sweetener cause anxiety?

A new study published by the journal PNAS in December 2022 found that aspartame could also contribute to anxiety.

Aspartame, a low-calorie sugar substitute, is found in many products including diet sodas and baked goods. It is a synthetic sweetener made of two amino acids: aspartic and phenylalanine.

Aspartame can be used to achieve the same sweetness as sugar in small quantities.

What is the link between Aspartame and anxiety?

A number of studies have shown that aspartame consumption is associated with a variety of neurophysiological symptoms, such as mood changes, headaches and memory and concentration issues. has also been linked to increased depression risks.

Researchers at Florida State University conducted a study that found aspartame could have a direct impact on the amygdala. The amygdala, a brain region that regulates fear and anxiety, is located in the frontal lobe.

The observed effects were not a reaction that was short-term, but a change in gene expression over time.

The FDA recommends that a daily maximum intake of 50 mg aspartame for every kilogram of bodyweight. In this study, the effects were observed with doses that were only 15% of this maximum. The “safe” amount of aspartame could be much lower than previously believed.

It is important to note that this study was done on mice. Further research will be needed to confirm the findings of this study in humans.

Is Aspartame Safe?

Aspartame is approved by many regulatory agencies in the United States and around the globe, including the FDA. These agencies have deemed it safe to consume based on numerous studies.

Aspartame does not appear to have any health benefits. Recent research has linked aspartame with several mental and physical health conditions. You may want to limit your intake.
