A lot of sleep can be harmful. According to one study, sleeping more than eight hours per night increased the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Recent studies have shown that lack of sleep increases the risk of gaining weight.

A meta-analysis of 30 studies, for example, linked sleep deprivation with increased weight gain among children and adults. One study found that nurses who sleep for less than 5 hours per night are more likely to gain weight than those who get 7 hours of shuteye each night.

This correlation could be explained by brain chemical changes that occur in response to stress, which can stimulate unhealthy food cravings. Sleep deprivation has also been linked to emotional eating, weight management and other issues.
